When Is Level 1 Enough?

Level 1 is genuinely sufficient for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) owners with a small battery (10–20 kWh) and a short daily commute under 30 miles. Overnight charging on a standard outlet fully replenishes the battery in a few hours. If your customer drives a PHEV and parks in a garage, they may not need to spend anything on installation.

Can I upgrade from Level 1 to Level 2 later?

Yes. Many homeowners start with the included Level 1 cord, then upgrade to a dedicated Level 2 circuit once they experience charging speed limitations. Installation is the same process as a new install — the charger itself plugs into the 240 V outlet or hardwires to the new circuit.

Is Level 2 charging safe in a garage?

Yes, when installed properly by a licensed electrician following NEC Article 625. GFCI protection, correct wire gauge, and a listed EVSE unit make garage Level 2 charging very safe. Modern EVSEs also shut down if they detect a ground fault or overtemperature condition.

What is Level 3 (DC fast charging)?

Level 3, also called DC Fast Charging (DCFC), bypasses the car's onboard charger and delivers DC power directly to the battery at 50–350 kW. It can charge most BEVs to 80% in 20–40 minutes. DCFC is primarily a commercial/public technology — residential installs are extremely rare due to cost and utility demand requirements.
